That absolutely completely depends on the kid, within the lines of common sense of course. I was the younger between my brother and I but I was a lot less trouble, when we were kids anyway. I see things like this now with kids of friends & neighbors. It is hard for me to say a specific age without knowing the kid.

I have a neighbor who sometimes leaves her 4 yr old alone with her 1 yr old, with the door unlocked, so she can walk down to the mail box or the laundry room from a second story appartment. That is not common sense! My son is 7 and I still try to get him to walk with me. Most 7 yr olds are ok for 5 minutes but he can be "busy" sometimes and I always feel safer when I can see him.

NEVER FORGET THAT KIDS START PARTYING WHEN MOM AND DAD ARE NOT HOME AROUND JR HIGH SCHOOL AND I DON'T THINK IT COMPLETELY STOPS UNTIL THEY MOVE OUT!!!

The kid should be at least 10. And that is for quick little errands during the day/afternoon to run to the grocery store or pick something up, and you should be home within at least 1 hour. Make sure they feel comfortable with you being gone too. They can be left home alone starting at age 13. Just call to check in often, and make sure they dont answer the doors at all!

I think a good age for kids to stay home is at the age of 11 or 12 but that if there mature enough because if they go off and burn the house down than they dont need to be home by them selves and plus the police cant say much to them at that age..

I'd say it's more of a maturity level than age. I've seen 12 year olds that I wouldn't leave alone in a house. Even after they are older I'd question it. But then I have seen 8 year olds that would be perfectly fine left alone in a house.10 - 12 though would be my over all age to start with the question.

Most states have no guidelines for this but the ones that do say that 14 is the age at which you can leave a child at home alone. I know that it is the same in England.

That would depend on the maturity and the behavior of your kid.
A 12 year old mature kid who could be trusted could stay alone after school. They should not be left alone all day long. All kids need supervision.

I was allowed at 8 years old but I'm really really mature for my age and my parents trust me to like not light the house on fire. Usually I would say 11 or 12. But my brother and I aren't allowed to leave the house and no one is allowed to come into the house. We weren't allowed to answer the phone if it was our friends until we were 10 and 11.

I started testing my 10 year old for 1/2 hour periods but I take her little brothers with me. I think it is good for them to develop a sense of self reliance but stupid to think they can handle it for a long period of time. Besides, there are many crazy people out there who might know when you leave your kids alone. Be careful!
