A windmill is an engine powered by the wind to produce energy, often contained in a large building as in traditional post mills, smock mills and tower mills. The energy windmills produce can be used in many ways, traditionally for grinding grain or spices, pumping water, sawing wood or hammering seeds. Modern wind power machines are used for generating electricity and are more commonly called wind turbines.

Windmills back in the 1700 and 1800's is how the settlers pumped water out of the ground.Europe was the heart of Windmill development and fortunately many fine examples are preserved, some, especially in Holland where Windmills are present in large numbers in a small area. Even more remarkable is the fact that many of these windmills are in very reasonable, many of them even in excellent, condition and a considerable number of them are working regularly. Moreover, there are windmills of the many varied types: drainage mills, corn mills, and industrial mills for all sorts of purposes.

Windmills take energy from the wind, and translate it to mechanical energy by using sails and a complex series of gears.
This mechanical energy can then be used for a number of purposes. Pumping water, grinding wheat into flour, even running a lightbulb.
