With the whole new passport thing happening does that affect Permanent residents or only citizens?

You'll need a passport. The rules just changed.

I believe that they just passed a law that you need a passport to cross any of our borders now, Canadian or Mexican. So you will need that, and any document that shows you are a legal resident...permanent alien card.

Matricula Consular ID's are not valid forms of ID for crossing back over to the U.S. but I beleive you can use it to get into Mexico.

If you are traveling by plane, you need a passport, as per the new laws. If you are traveling by car, you do not. This will change in January 2008, tho. As it stands, only air travelers need to worry.

and your green card!

the new rules are for US passports holders traveling to Canada and Bahamas for vacation etc
