My 3 1/2 year old daugter has a yeast infection. She is very uncomfortable, and I don't know what to do. It hurts when she pees and she is really red. It's definetly not diaper rash, because she is completely potty trained, so I don't think diaper rash cream will work.

I called the pharmacy to ask if it was ok to use otc yeast infection creams on kids her age. They said it was too strong for little kids, so don't use it. And they also said that they could not legally give out medical advice, so they couldn't give me any suggestions.

So then I called the docs answering service and told them what was wrong, and they said they would have the on call doctor call me. That was about 3 hours ago, and no call yet. It is Saturday night, so I can't get her in to see a doctor for a couple of days.

So, is there anyone out there who has a child that has had a yeast infection? What can I do to ease her discomfort untill I can get a doctors appointment?

Thanks in advance.

Vagisil, the same thing you do with an adult's yeast infection, ONLY if you are positive that it is a yeast infection.

A doctor will tell you the same, unless your child has a Urinary Tract Infection, and the doc will tell you to drink cranberry juice, and give you anti-biotics...

Either way, you should have it checked out as soon as possible by a doc...

Ok, been there done that...So sad...
Try some of the following that are aproved by a ped. dr.
1. Dr. Smiths diaper rash cream (walmart) or Boudreaux Butt Cream (walmart & Target) (both have boric acid which will help heal the infection
2. Tinactin (Buy any where)(this will help the infection also Put on before the cream, and use sparingly)
3. For the pain and other stuff, Dermaplast spray, Before everything (works wonders and very safe.kills the pain) You can buy this at walmart and most pharmacies.
The dr. may give you something called Nystatin (oral), if he give you something else, ask about this (it is mild and works way better than most other stuff)
Stay away from sugar, fruits juice and any thing that is acedic. water, milk etc is good as well as food.
During the day; Place baby (diaperless) out in the sun, the vit D and other things will help speed the healing process (just for about 5-15 min dep. on childs sens to light) really works well. Make sure you clean diaper often or better yet just leave off, to clean area run baby under warm water then spray some more of the pain relvr Derm.
While giving a bath, place a little baking soda or oatmeal (yes real oatmeal) in water make it real hot then let cool off to baby temp. Hope this helps. Good Mom
(use cream even though she is potty trained, my 6 yr old girl had the same issue too) Hard for a little one to clean really really well, so the cream will help

Give her a warm bath with several cups of vinegar to soothe her swelling and pain and feed her yogurt with active yeast cultures (the label will tell you if it has active yeast cultures). If she is on antibiotics and that was the cause of the infection; in the future feed her yogurt with active yeast cultures when she's on antibiotics. If she isn't on antibiotics you need to introduce the yogurt into her regular diet.

I know the pharmacy told you that the OTC stuff can't be used but some of it can. My son gets candida rashes (which is yeast) and I use Lotrimin cream on the rash and have since he was about 9 months old and it clears up the rash within days.

Could also be a UTI , that is more common in children than Yeast infections. The best advice for now... eating Yogurt can help with the level of yeast... and drinking Cranberry Juice can help with the UTI...

The other option is the emergency room... which I think would be more reasonable at this time... don't wait...

You should not give her anything that is for adults only. Is it a cheesy like discharge (Yeast Infection) or is it burning when she pees like a Bladder Infection? It is rare for a child to have a Yeast Inf.
Try something that will numb her like Desitin. Keep her dry as possible. Give her yogurt. Make sure she doesn't drink citrus juice. Cranberry or apple juice is okay.
Most of all call her doctor.

Feed her plain yogurt everyday, if you can, it helps clear it up the natural way.
