Boxers and briefs seem to be the most popular for boys his age. But whatever he is most comfortable with should be what he wears. Buy him a few different kinds and let him pick which he likes best or if he likes a bit of variety.

Listen I myself am 14 and know what is the safest thing to wear . The answer is to wear boxer shorts or also known as boxers. This may sound awkward but lots of kids who wear what middle school (11-13 year old) kids call whitey tighties usually get picked on. Also kids that age don't really know the concept of that kids grow in certain places at different times as others and it is easier for crueler kids to judge when their victims are wearing briefs or also known as I said before as whitey tighties.
Also, Boxers are way more comfortable for kids his age because they are looser. Even if he doesn't know this yet he probably will notice this when he tries them.

It's a matter of personally preference... ask him what he likes the best. Maybe get a few types for him to try out. For changing on gym days he may want to wear something that is socially acceptable because sometimes kids can be embarrassed about these things (peer pressure, etc.).

Whatever he's most comfortable in.
I knew a 5 year old boy who asked his mom to please get him boxers because his underwear embarrassed him at his summer daycare when they would go to the waterpark and have to change - all the other kids had boxers and he was embarrassed to not have boxers.
My brother never wanted boxers.
Just whatever he wants to wear.

I don't think you should have to change your underwear at school.. It doesn't really matter. Whatever's comfortable.

Its his personal preference. Its about what he wants to wear. Overall, I recommend breifs and boxer briefs. They give you support and hide an erection.
