Because usually nothing is close enough to provide a relative difference. When you are driving and the moon is in the sky, It appears to be just sitting there because it is far away. When you are in a plane, the ground is far away, so it appears to be moving slowly underneath.
Its a matter of perspective relative to distance.

It only feels like you are going slow, but you are going probably the fastest that you ever will in your life. It is just that you are so far away from things that it seems like you are going slow. There are no concrete landmarks for you to watch go by to help determine your speed. And if you look at the ground it's the same thing. Think of how if you stand right next to the road and watch a car go by, you barely have time to catch it's color, but if you stand 100 yards away from the road, it seems to be going much slower...and slower and slower the further away. This is perspective of the fact that you have such a wide peripheral in your eyesight that you see it for longer. I hope you understand what I am trying to say and I hope this answers your question!

It looks like you're traveling very slowly because you are several miles up in the air.

Next time you fly, have a look down at a large city. Take notice of how long it takes for this city to go from one side of the window to the other, and out of view. For instance, it takes about 10 minutes for Paris and the surrounding countryside to go from one side of a window to the other. That is a distance of about 60 miles, maybe more. So I would have travelled over 60 miles in 10 minutes.

That's really fast!

If you were flying 40 or 50 feet off the ground you would get the thriil of fast flight at 600 miles an hour......but 5 or 6 miles up in the air there's nothing much moving too quickly.............

In the air there are no objects that are stationary within close proximity to compaire your speed to. When the plane takes off it feels fast because you see things closer to you wizzing past you.

This is just like in life, we often measure our abilities and progress by compareing it with the others around us. If only we could be like the plane, We would never feel the need to "keep up with the Jones'". We would be going fast but feeling content for we have nothing to compair it too. That is happiness.

sorry I tend to digress.....
