Our litter of basset hound puppies are almost 5 weeks old now. The lady that has the stud dog has been wonderful. All she wants is the pick of the litter (which we agreed to), but she's went above and beyond what we expected. She's bought all the food for our b itch, while pregnant and nursing, expensive food. She also spent $30.00 on powered goats milk as a supplement that she swears by, for our b itch. She paid for the dewclaw removal and the dewormings. She made folders for each of the puppies for their new families to take home with them, with information about their puppy and the parents. And on and on... Like I said, we couldn't ask for better.

Not enough room to type my whole question, so brb with the rest.

Today she emailed me and said she would like to come over sometime this week and take 3 of the puppies to bring to the school where she works as a kindergarten teacher. The kids have been dying to see the puppies. I haven't really known this lady that long, probably about 4 months or so. When she asked me this, I immediantly started to feel uneasy. I just feel the puppies are to young to be around that many children and they are no vacinated yet, which could be deadly for them. Also, I'm concerned that she asked for 3 of them, which is half the litter. Does that sound weird to anyone else? Why not just one of the puppies? I'm worried that she might take the puppies and run off with them and they are way to young to be away from their mom. So my question is... Do you think I'm just being paranoid? What would you do? Like I said, she seems like a very nice lady, but I've only known her a short time.

Thanks!

Let me add this. She was going to send her grown son to pick up the puppies about 30 minutes before school lets out, so they wouldn't be there all day. And I can't take them at that time, because I have kids myself that I have to pick up from school at the same time and there is no way I'd make it back to my part of town in time.

I can't imagine someone very knowledgable, wanting to take a 5 week old puppy to a classroom full of kids. There is NO WAY I would allow someone to do that with my puppies. You have allowed her to get much to involved, and she likely thinks you co-bred the litter.

I would also never have agreed to pick puppy, 2nd pick is the usual. It is the bit ch owners litter, usually anyway. I don't think I would have accepted all the 'help' either. All I want from a stud owner is semen and maybe referrals for puppy homes. Otherwise, some people will take right over, and, as the bit ch owner, it is *my* litter.

Is this a long time show breeder that has the stud? It sounds like it is just some woman with a pet Basset.

Nothing wrong with her getting the pick of the litter, since no stud fee was paid. U leave some unanswered questions, such as, is the lady from ur neighborhood or was she a total stranger. Do u know for a fact that she is a teacher. U can easily get some background info on her if u know her name and where she lives. If all checks out, it`s probably safe to let her take the pups to school when they r a little older or better yet find a 1/2 hr or so to take the pups urself. U allowed her to get too involved and now u feel obligated. Check her out and don`t let the pups go anywhere at this early age. Be firm, u are the owner and if she is on the level with u, she will see ur point.

As you said, she has done more than required or even wanted, in my opinion. But, she also is very concerned for the health of all the pups and mom. She should know better than to take the pups to a kindergarten class. They are too young. They could get hurt or sick. Give her some pictures of them for the kids, and promise to take more as they grow. Do NOT let her take them from your home. She MIGHT not be so nice...never know these days. She may feel like she should have 3 pups due to all the work and money she put into them so far.

I advise you to tell her that you want to go with her and supervise the children when their handling the puppies, when ur gone ask someone tom supervise the rest of the litter and b itch... when u ask her if u can go make so many reasons for you to go that she will just have to say yes. And if you ask her with your reasons and she says no then politely ask her why and she'll probably make up a stupid excuse, tell her that u feel more safe with the puppies being with little kids, and if she still says no then politely say no too...u can nvr trust strangers that act to friendly!

Well, I would tell her that youre a little uneasy because they havent had their shots yet and you wouldnt want anything to happen. If you really feel obligated to her, try to work it out on a day that you could possibly come in as a guest, bring in the pups for a little while, then leave with them.

I would tell her that it would be better to wait until the pups have been vaccinated and then YOU will take them up to the school to visit. You can say( as a excuse) that a full day would be too much for the pups to be at the school. If she doesn't like this and reacts badly you know that she has ulterior motives.

I'm not an expert, but I think you should go with your gut. Usually human instinct is right. I personally would tell her how I felt about them being away from their mother, if you tell her how you feel, and she still wants them, then you might have a problem. But that's just my opinion.

I would say, sorry, but 5 weeks is too young, because they have not had their vaccinations yet.
