apparently, it's in the bible. the whole, man of one wife thing, but should people allow that to stop them from letting someone be their pastor? my church actually had shouting matches going on about it....

it's a baptist church---and i guess i need to add again that if u don't have nice things to say, don't say them. this is religion and spirituality, so most questions will be from believers of different faiths

It is a conditional thing................

I've never been divorced. Have had a fellow college student now serving in the ministry who was divorced several years ago.
So this is my take on the subject.......

God can forgive us for our sins. And that is the whole message that we as preachers are presenting from behind the pulpit. Jesus can forgive us for our sins. Divorce is clearly a sin and God intends for us to stay with the person we are married too. But, Jesus can forgive us and make things right in our lives. If as a preacher you want to present that message to others, then may God bless the ministry you are in.

But, the other side of the coin is....
what kind of situation caused the divorce.....
did the person who wants to be pastor cheat on their spouse? was their immorality on their part? Yes, God can forgive and make things right, but the sins we commit can make a black eye on our resume in the eyes of men and it's hard to be a leader of men when that kind of thing has happened. We have to live with the consequences of our sins and having people not trust you and want to follow you after that situation is what happens.

Just leave the ministry in the Lord's hands and let Him guide you. If the person still feels that desire to serve then there may be roadblocks in the way now as a consequence of that sin
But if the Lord has called that person to serve then somehow the door will open again to follow the road of ministry.

Hope that helps some

It takes two people to create a divorce. If a wife no longer loves the man should she or he stay together. We know how Jesus hates divorce, but there comes a time when it is necessary. Perhaps the pastor even divorced before he became a pastor. Does that mean he can't serve God? Forgiveness is a hard thing but we have to forgive so others will forgive us. If your church is against divorce, it is better to not hire a divorced pastor. Some will never forgive, and all it does is divide the church. The man should go elsewhere where he will be loved. There are always loving and forgiving churches.

I am a lapsed Catholic along with many of my old school friends. None of my athiest/agnostic friends have divorced. I have to admit that I view it as a sign of immaturity if I find out someone is divorced. I know people have their reasons to get divorced but when people rant and rave about gay marriage ruining the institution.... all I can think about is all those divorced Christians. I think I would not hold this preacher's moral teachings very seriously.
But then again.... forgiveness... we all make mistakes... I see the problem. Lots of things that are in the bible we now ignore due to changes in society and culture, right? slavery, concubines, etc. You should follow the teachings of your church. Us Catholics, of course, dont have quite the same problems with our spiritual leaders :)

The Bible is very clear about it... As you mentioned "the husband of one wife". If you want to follow the Bible, then it just isn't right.

One thing I like to ask myself when dealing with these types of situations is "Am I trying to make the Bible justify my thoughts/decisions, or am I trying to model my life after what God would have for me?" God knows what's best for us, and we should definately follow his Word even when it doesn't fall inline with our thoughts. The Bible says (paraphrased) "Walk by faith, not by sight" Basically trust God even when it may not seem like the obvious answer

"Apparently" it's in the Bible?????? If a man is a husband of one wife, does that mean he wasn't the husband of one wife before and after divorcing, married this one?? Be careful that you are reading for yourself and not taking someone else's definition.

i believe in the bible but the bible has a whole lot of rules that we are to follow and not one person on the face of this earth can say that they follow each and every rule. it shouldn't matter whether he is divorced or not, what should matter is that he preaches the word of God and tries to do right by the bible. notice that i said "tries".

The Bible judges leadership on the time of leadership. At the time of leadership was the person married to the first spouse? If so, then they are required to step down if they cannot handle the affairs of their household. If it happened before entering the clergy, then it's not held agains them.

It should be alright........but it says in the Bible that children of divorced or parents splitting, whatever will be damned.
And it's the truth.
Well is this a Catholic church? Methodist? what exactly?
I think some religions may be stricter on their views

It is wrong in some cases to remarry and not in others, depending on the reason..... such as say, adultery. Even if it was a wrongful divorce, it can be forgiven. It definitely is not an unforgivable sin.
