English has the most words of any modern languages. Many claim that this means it has a higher specificity for labeling the world around us with the flavor we want. (Actually, Punjabi is very similar to English in distribution, and may have more words because of its widespread geographical distribution and borrowing from English.)
English has more than twice that of French, and more than three times that of Russian. However, these languages can often use several words to code for one concept, and may eliminate some unnecessary repeats of words with the same definition that we have in English.
Which is preferable? Who knows. Some bilingual people find that sometimes it is easier to express an idea in one language than another. For this, you may want to look into the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.
However, many Native American languages have smaller units of meaning than English, which are strewn together to describe and explain new concepts, experiences, and objects. One might say that while these languages have few actual words, they have a great potential for explaining the world around them.
