I got my second hole done with a gun, and it was very painful. It was done too high, too, so I ended up letting it grow up because whenever I wore earrings they made my ears ached. (This was before cartiledge piercing -- I'm 38.)
When I got the top of my ear pierced three years ago, it didn't hurt at all, but I got it caught in a sweater and took it out because it was hurting... in the morning it was grown up! So, no more for me. However, my sixteen-year old daughter has two holes in each ear, and she loves them. They've never given her a bit of trouble, but she used only alcohol -- no hydrogen peroxide -- to clean the rings, studs and her ears! Just remember to keep everything clean and you should be fine. And let all new earrings soak in alcohol for at least three minutes before putting them in your ears, even if you take them straight from the package.
I recommend no gun if you can avoid it. A lot of piercers do so with long needles or just punch the new ring through. Be sure the person wears gloves and uses sterilized products or you're outta there! No one wants hepatisis for a birthday gift!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

if you`re getting a second hole in the lobe of the ear, i assume it`ll feel just like the first whole. don`t get it pierced with a gun though, GUN IS A NO NO. it`s really BLUNT, it can shatter cartilage or infect your earlobe. i`ve had that happen .. it hurt like a b*tch. but to answer your question, it doesn`t really hurt. you`ll kind of jump up the minute you feel the needle through your skin&you`ll feel a hot sensation. be sure to eat and be fully nourished before you get it pierced&you`ll be okay !

you must have been young enough when you got the first that you don't remember, huh? It hurts a little, but not bad. I think the worst thing is the sound of the 'gun'. It makes a snap sound, and then your ear feels really really hot. It's more a hot sensation than pain, and once it's over, that's the worst of it.
Don't worry, it will be fine!

It does hurt a little but yes it is more of a burring sensation. Personally i would wait until your a little bit older so you can decide if you really want one. just because i got mine the day i turned thirteen and am now regreting it. (barely 14).
Sorry dont mean to sound like a mother.

I got my second hole on my 18th birthday. And to be honest I was scared at first but I wanted to get it so badly. But then when I got it, it wasn't even bad. All it feels like is a quick pinch, it doesn't even hurt.
