Parents who abuse their kids should be in jail.

No one has the right to hit anyone especially a parent who will leave bruises. A black eye given to a child by a parent is a very serious violation. Report this to a school counselor or an adult who you trust. Hitting someone like this is not a very good sign. Perhaps there is alcohol or drugs involved. There is definitely something wrong here.
Some adults should never become parents.
And I don't think your parents got divorced because of you. I'm so glad that your mother stood by you when you needed her the most!
You sound like a really down to earth person.

Well that is a pretty touchy subject. MY own personnel beliefs is to punish the child if the child did something wrong . I don't hit my kids but I do smoke them (make them workout) I'm in the military. But if you mean hit as in with a closed fist then that parent is cruel nut a slap can be very effective allot of people would say that the American youth are the way they are today because children no longer get slapped. That covers that part and now the second if and when I slap my kids bottom or even smoke them yes I feel bad but it is a lesson they need to learn so they wont do it again

I am sorry that you went through that.

While there is really no excuse for any parent abusing their children, I believe that some parents do so because of their own history of abuse from their parents (although it still doesn't make it right). That being said , these parents just can't seem to break the abusive cycle (and it's not like they can't...they can) so unfortunately , it carries on. With situations like these, I believe interventions are vital for the well being of that child. I'm also glad that you came out with this question because situations like these should never be kept in the dark. I hope that answered your question.

There is a difference between abuse and using corporal punishment as discipline. Some people who were raised in families that accepted mild corporal punishment (like a smack on the bum) use it on their children they feel that it is somewhat effective. But when a parent hits their children, causing them to bruise and get hurt, it is abuse.

Some nasty parents out there just don't feel any sympathy, they're crazy!!!

Well as a latina I used to get hit with the chancla or the belt, but it was as punishment cause of the bad things I had done. It was only for discipline. Kids who don't get discipline grow up to be the bad ones, well most of the anyways.

I am sorry to hear this happened to you. Some people are sick and some are just plain mean. If you know of people who get hit you should call social services or child protective services so they can get the help they need.

I understand exactly how you feel. I think it is something in us women that makes us feel this way. I can't speak for men in general but from what I have seen it doesn't appear to have any effect on them. I myself don't understand it. It tears me apart when I see a father hit his child in an abusive way.

Sometimes kids are extremely annoying and do things to make adults mad on purpose. That in comb. with the daily stress of work, bills and chores makes any extra stress unbearable for some folks.
Also, some kids are just plain bad and need a beat down.

Often, it's in reaction to past or present problems or stresses they can't cope with, such as:
UNMET EMOTIONAL NEEDS: Parents who can't relate well to other adults may expect children to take care of parents, satisfy their need for love, protection, self-esteem.
FREQUENT CRISES: Financial, job, legal problems, major illness, etc., can cause a parent to "take it out" on a child.
POOR CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES: Many abusive adults were mistreated themselves as children and have a poor, self-image.
DRUG OR ALCOHOL PROBLEMS: Such problems limit parental ability to care properly for children.
Most abusive parents are "normal." Relatively few are "criminal" or mentally unbalanced.
