I would like a small breed dog to keep my 80lb dog company while I'm away. I don't want a breed with many genetic health problems or one that is fragile.

Our schipperke is small and tough. We got a schipperke to be sturdy and strong enough to play with our kids and dogs, and he is NOT fragile. He's the most devoted loving little dog I've ever met. He'll play with the small boys (jack russel) and the large boys (akita/malamute). Plus go to our daughter's tea parties. I'm really impressed by these little guys.

The only health issues we've had with him were accidents when he was a pup because he zings around the room like a maniac, and would crash into things...like sticks in the eye etc. When he outgrew that...no problems at all.

Go to your local Humane Society and see what they have on hand first, then if they have a canine with the "correct stuff" in your household. In case you have young children then a small dog may not be a excellent option, effortlessly harm. Get a sturdy medium little canine like a corgi. Also in case your children are older and won't have a lot attention for the canine and you will be the care giver then opt for a canine that can adopt to your lifestyle. I possess dachshunds. I like them, they are loyal, playful and willing to snuggle at every time. They have to be knowledgeable from puppy hood to be just right pets. And socialized with other puppies, individuals and kids!. Do not let your dog play chunk, or bite on you. Make certain they've a bite toy and realize it is the one thing they may be able to chew. Time spent now on sufferer coaching will make for a loving, well behaved lifetime pet. Any puppies coming in to a family with a pet in place is going to have got to be dealt with adroitly. First consistently be equal for your time spent with both puppies, but at first, the senior dog must get a little bit extra distinct attention. No hard housing until they have got grow to be good acquainted difficult housing can turn severe in a second, if not monitored.

Go to a local rescue and save a small dog. You don't need a pure breed for a companion to your large dog. There are all kinds of small dogs that are waiting for a home. And don't get one that is too small and could get hurt by a big 80 pound dog.

A Jack russells, or Parson russells do well with your 80lb dog. They are very active and have thick strong bones, its a good companion for big dogs.

It depends on the breed of your big dog. I have a Pit which we had a Boston Terrier and the Boston Ruled the Pit.
