The proper way to do it is: Dr. and Mrs. John Smith. If you wish to use her name it is Dr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith.

In a way, it depends on how well you know them, and their views on such issues as names and titles.,

"Proper etiquette" might say differently, but if Joan has any feminist beliefs, she may be offended by :
1. Mrs (may prefer Ms)
2. Dr and Mrs John Soandso (negates her own name, makes her a possesion of her husband)

sorry if this confuses this issue more...

maybe you could simply address to:

John and Joan Soandso
OR
Joan and John Soandso

The most traditional was to address it is Mr. & Mrs John so & so. That is the oldest way, but a more modern way would be Mr John and Mrs Jane soandso

I think u can do it that way, but you could also do Dr and Mrs John SoandSo. I think it sounds better with less "and"s

The proper way is to do the Dr. part instead of Mr......I don't really know why. You don't address anyone else that way, like Trucker & Mrs. Doe or Plumber John, kinda goofy I think.
