Charles T. Pepper, M.D. (1830 – 1903) was the original inspiration for the Dr Pepper brand, according to the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Company. Born in Montgomery County, Virginia, he earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia and after a stint as a surgeon during the Civil War he settled down in Rural Retreat, Virginia where he would meet Wade Morrison, co-founder of the company that bears Dr. Pepper's name.

Dr Pepper was originally promoted by Dr. Charles T. Pepper as an anti-malarial agent, based on the trace amounts of quinine found in the soft drink. Unfortunately, scientific evidence for this claim failed to materialize.

It was formulated by German pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. To test his new drink, he first offered it to store owner Morrison, who also found it to his liking. Therefore,
Dr Pepper originated as a fountain drink.
It has no medicinal purposes but there was an Urban legend that stated that it had prune juice in it. That of course is false.
I can see no rewarding purposes to drink it every day. Especially since it was not invented by a doctor only named after one.

Well, I also know doctors who smoke... Dr. Pepper is full of empty calories and caffeine. It is definitely not a health promoter!
