it is a 3 litre, 6-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection and a single over head cam. single turbo is not the same as a twin turbo. any turbo runs off the exhaust from the headers coming off the engine block. twin turbos run off both of the headers coming off of either side of a v-style engine. turbos can be expensive to maintain, and will cause harder wear on your engine, however, if you are planning on racing, turbos are more efficient than other alternatives, such as a supercharger. since they run off of exhaust, not another pulley, there is less wear and pressure on the engine and there isnt another pully to turn. a twin turbo would be better for racing, but would definitely need a lot of attention every so often. you would need to replace belts and pullys often to maintain the turbos abilities. however, a single overhead cam is not really a good choice for racing, you just wont get the results you are looking for, even with a twin turbo.

The SOHC is the one in the z31. I think it was made from 1984-1989(and a half?) Its a cheap, cast iron block with an aluminum head with 2 valves per cylinder. The fuel injection, although not mechanical, is still basic. And all those crazy gauges, what happens when they break! The engine is nothing special, even the turbo verion only makes about 200hp, 220#torque. The injectors can handle up to about 260hp. The internals are probable crappy too.
The twin turbo is probably the z32 (1989-1998 ish) That is the nice version. First off, it doesnt look like a slice of cheese. Second, the engine is on par with the other engines produced in that time period. The z32 Comes with something like 300hp and a bunch of torque. Its a DOHC, there are AWD versions, AWS versions and I think a lot of them have 6 speeds. You can expect to pay about $8000 or more for a good one.

the engine in all 300ZX's is the VG30. for the sake of simplicity i'll just talk about the turbo engines. the 84-89 300ZX used the VG30ET. VG30ET is turbo charged with a single T3 turbo. the turbo engine puts out 200hp and 227ft/lbs of tq. the 90's 300ZX uses the VG30DETT. the VG30DETT is dual overhead cam twin turbo. it uses twin T28 turbos. the twin turbo engine makes 300hp and 280ft/lbs tq. as for which is better for racing its a matter of preference. the VG30ET can make just as much power as the VG30DETT. the VG30ET is much much easier to work on but parts are harder to find. while the DETT is much harder to work on but performance parts are more plentiful.
as for always wanting the dohc over the sohc, very untrue. it depends on when you want your power. the sohc makes much more torque in the lower to mid range rpms. the dohc makes more torque in the upper rpms. again it is a personal preference do you want to make your power from 3000 to 5000rpm or do you want to make power about 4000rpm to 6500rpm.

Engine size its a 3liter 6 cylinder electronic fuel injected
single over head cam. Turbo's are always plastered on the
side or back-end of car if it is. Twin-turbos are definatley the
fastest and most exspensive to maintain. Twin-turbo car will
always cost more.

Okay, EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection. SOHC is Single OverHead Cam. You ALWAYS, ALWAYS want twin cams if you are going to race or even just want more pick-up, or even if you want a smoother-running, more efficient engine. Last I checked, overhead cam engines do not require pushrods, so the efficiency right THERE is obvious.

sure your engine is sohc. What they mean with the aid of sixteen valves it which you have 4 valves in keeping with cylinder. as a effect 4 cylinders each with 4 valves and additionally you get the sixteen valves. One good yet not consistently good way is to verify the valve conceal (fairly some hondas your 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and up will say dohc on the valve conceal. I say it incredibly is unreliable because of the fact the valve conceal can get replaced). in case you may tell in case you have one cam kit or 2 is yet in a distinctive thank you to make certain. One cam kit = one cam a.ok.a sohc and a pair of cam gears = 2 cams a.ok.a dohc.
