I don't think you need to go bright and cheery, especially if you do not have things that would go with a bright and cheery room. You need to pick a color that will aceent you home and decor, but make sure to add more light to the room, highlight areas and use accent pieces that are a little lighter if you do a mid shade wall for example. I recently moved into a smaller house that had a darker dining area and the owner painted it a light peach like color, now its just a small dark peach room.

You just need to paint a color you enjoy that light can bounce off of, when you add more light to the room. Good luck.

The trend at this time is to paint the walls with a little more color. You could do a bright color on one wall to make it more cheery. As always though, neutral walls are ok and you may want to use some decorator items in bright colors. Good luck.

The colors with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us. A discussion with a professional color consultant can help to decide individual needs and select appropriate color.

stay away from anything too dark like reds or navy blues or emerald greens unless you want to be buying a lot of lights or putting in a window.

Pastels,(greens/blues) or creams would help brighten up the room.
if the house is for a single guy.
