She absolutely has a case for assault (probably with a "hate crime" addition since it was religious-based). That officer was completely out of line to tell her otherwise. Have her contact another police officer immediately. If that doesn't work, a civil suit against the woman AND against the police is an absolute "gimme".

The officers would be somewhat wrong. No matter where your friend's friend is moving, her mom has no right to hit or push anyone. That is defined as assault so your friend can technically sue. In reality, it really isn't worth it for money because the lawyer fees will be higher then the money she gets. She could try to get a restraining order, but there needs to be multiples examples of endangerment of a person. The best thing she could do is ask for a written apology and avoid the friend's mom. However, if there are any unseen problems after birth that may have been caused by the friend's mother, then you can press charges and win.

The offices have no idea. Talk with the city attorney. It's assult, it's battery, if there are witnesses it's a felony.
There is also civil court where a damage award can be awarded and all hospital bills paid.

you should pose this question in 'law and ethics' too. I don't see how the police wouldn't let her press assault charges. The woman deliberately pushed her and caused harm...that should meet the definition. Maybe they should point out that it was a hate crime (which it was) since that will get more attention.

Damn, this is why extremism pisses me off. I hope your friend is okay, and yes there is a case and charges should be pressed.

It seems like she could do something. If I was her I would contact a lawyer and see what can be done.Knowing she was pregnant it seems like charges could be, danger to a unborn child or something like that.Good-luck.

talk to a lawyer, not officers. it sounds like assault to me, and pushing someone who is pregnant is not just assault on her, but assault on the unborn child.

Talk to a lawyer.
The last people to ask for legal council are police and, often, public defenders.

How does she not have a case? That is disgusting. That is why any religion that clains to be the only way to God is very harmful.
