How do other European countries 'control their dogs?

Yes other countries are having it too. I think it is really more a question of bad owners, dog abuse and people not seeking proper training for their dogs. The person who stated a number in question of pit bull attacks above is just an example of the common misconceptions and just blatant wrong information that only hurts the dogs.

There are thousands of Soi (street) Dogs everywhere in Thailand. They are given unwanted food now and again. Some are very sad. Full of Lice and Ticks. How many are Rabid is not known but if one is bitten its off to the Hospital for lots of painful Jabs......After complaints from Tourists in Pattaya, there has been a rule that they are not to be allowed onto the Beaches. But Thais are notoriously lawless, and they have largely ignored this.
I fed daily a loverly Bi tch who had a litter of six on the Beach a few months ago, and took the most beautiful Puppy which we adore. See my avatar for her at 6wks. The other five were taken but by whom? Not to be eaten I hope. The very Northern Thais do that I am told, and a lot of them have come down here to find work. It doesn't bear thinking about.......

No, the issue of Breed Specific Legistlation(BSL)is worldwide. Many US cities have enacted restrictions on growing numbers of dog breeds or types, meaning that if your dog LOOKS a certain way, it may be restricted in some fashion. You may be forced to have it de-sexed, registered with law enforcement, keep it behind a secure fence, put a muzzle on it in public(IF you are allowed to take it off your property at all, even for a trip to the vet's), and you may have to maintain outrageously high liability insurance on it, which is often impossible to obtain. It has nothing to do with how your dog acts, or its history(or lack thereof)of aggressive behavior, but whether or not it LOOKS a certain way. Many cities have banned dogs such as Pit Bull Terriers, Akitas, Chows, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc., or anything that LOOKS like it MIGHT have one of those breeds in its genetic make-up. A total ban means that your dog, if someone thinks it looks like the wrong kind, will be taken and KILLED, and you will go to jail, whether or not your dog runs at large, or has ever even so much as growled at anyone. BLS is a knee-jerk reaction to dog bites, which have suddenly become news-worthy, in spite of the fact that actual statistics maintained in the US since the 1960's DO NOT show an increase in the average number of fatal dog attacks each year! Rather than target irresponsible owners of ANY breed, who allow their dogs to run at large, and who often train their dogs to be aggressive in order to enhance their own image as "thugs", BSL goes after all dog owners. Many people feel that it won't affect them, since they don't have "pit bulls". A recent bill in California would have required all Sighthounds(Greyhounds, Whippets, Borzois, etc.)to be spayed/neutered and muzzled, among other things, on the grounds that they were bred for "blood sports" like coursing, and if they'd do that to a rabbit, just imagine what they'd to to a child! NO breed of dog is exempt, once a bite from that breed becomes public record. As we have seen from the Dangerous Dogs Act of Great Britain, serious and even lethal dog attacks STILL continue, but by other breeds or cross-breeds, because it does not address the REAL problem, which is that of PEOPLE who either do not care, or actually want to have a vicious dog.

It may be a myth but I understand that in a lot of European countries they have a large number of stray dogs. Rabies is certainly a problem on the continent and not in the UK. So my point is that if they can't even control strays then I doubt they control breeds.

no it is the usa too. I know that many cities in the united states are banning them because of an over use on our country's health care system. the pits are causing an over extensive use of the e.r. Many people are dying because of the pit attacks.Yes I know other dogs bite and attack too ,but the point being is they dont kill humans like pits do . I am sorry if I offend anybody but the truth is the truth and sometimes it hurts. good luck to you.

No this crap is everywhere. The government is slowly taking away our rights. People are allowing it to go on to. Soon there will be dog bands on all types of dogs. Why not punish the owner-not the animal. The animal learns bad behavior from the owner. Animals and children act the way that the owner/parent allows them to act. PUNISH THE DEED, NOT THE BREED!!!

I don't know about other European countries, but I would like to know. Here in the US there is an upswing in breeding aggressive breeds and it seems that many owners of these dogs believe that their dogs are not going to be problems, but:

if you read the above stories you will see there is a huge problem. People need to be realistic about dogs. Dogs are animals and are bound by their instinct.

If you get some good responses, I would pass them on to our local animal control. I have three dogs right now, just had to put our eldest to sleep. I hate to see the danger and consequences caused by inept ownership of dogs.

I live in the US and we are banning Pit Bulls from the public. Our rule is if it is not on a leash and runing around, it gets taken away or the owner is left with a warning. Research says that within one year, there are about 47 Pit Bull attacks! That is alot of dog attacks. They kill too.
