One reason is for influential purposes. The region, that being the middle east, has become quiet independent and some what radical due to Islamic states and dictatorships. Although it is not like to be said, due to these "radicals" taking control the west (Europe, USA and industrial Asia) no longer had direct influence on the political powers. The United States may have hoped to help foster a friendly state in the region so that the west could have an indirect influence on the region. However this Iraqi government has shown to be very free willed. More influence in the area means easier access to the resources and to a strategic area of the world.
Second is due to resources. A discussion about this war cannot be had with out the acknowledgement of this resource rich area; i.e. oil. When the war began there was no contingency made for security forces to protect museums and other national pride entities. However special operations forces were used to secure not only oil fields but also the Ministry of Oil in Iraq. Oil is very powerful and "fuels" most of the industry in this world.
Finally it’s our duty to remain there. As a nation we have shown that when we start something we try our best to finish it. We have a responsibility to the citizens of Iraq to stay to help them make something of themselves. We fail to understand that these people have been oppresses for so long and some have vendettas against other families or sects in the Islamic faith. This has become an opportunity to rage out against these people. Also due to the teachings of radical Islam we as a society are seen as an evil influence. Their beliefs, which are actually quiet conservative and would make any Republican blush, are not what we view as "normal. From their stance on equality of the sexes (they are against it) to how they apply the Quran to their rule of law, their ideals differ in many ways from ours. With us there they have seen this as an opportunity to hurt us even further and to fight their war against us. They use our occupation as fuel to radicalize and influence young easily manipulated youth.
As a society and a nation we have a responsibility and duty to try and remain as long as possible to give the people the best foundation possible. In the end it is up to the Iraqi’s to make themselves into what they want. We are there because we started this war with them. Now we have to finish it.

It's not for the oil. That is such a liberal point of view and a very old argument. We are still there because leaving would cause sucha vacuum, we would be hated around the world more than we already are. Make no mistake, all the countires on the sidelines watching want us to stay. They know full well if we leave, it will be chaos.

We, The United states, eliminated their government. It is now our duty and obligation to help Iraq regain control through support. The more troops there the faster the training can be completed. This is the way I see it. How would the world view us if we went in there destroyed and just left? Think that would be a positive view or outcome? No, we would be condemned worse than we are now! Like Powell said, you broke it, you own it!
