if you are serious about adopting a special needs child you can go to a variety of different agencies who place special needs kids into adoption. Bernados, Centrecare, Anglicare to name a few.

Get an appointment to discuss your decision to adopt at one of these agencies.

Consider taking on some short or medium term foster care of special needs kids, there is a strong demand for people to act as respite carers for kids with special needs, this would give you plenty of experience and information that you would not otherwise gain about caring for special needs kids.

You can opt to be respite carer for one child one weekend a month and this would be really appreciated and it also gets you into some courses that foster parents are given to learn about special needs kids.

If you want to adopt a special needs kid you do need to show that you can provide for the needs of the child. Occasionally the government can opt to give you a 'supported adoption' where the costs for serious health care are taken care of by the government though how common this is I dont know.

You will need to show that you have a stable life, you will need to undergo a working with children police check and be of good health and good character to be eligible to adopt.

There are many disabilities and conditions which affect children in only mild to moderate ways which are not too difficult to manage. Downs Syndrome is only one of these conditions.

Best of luck in your search.

I also live in Australia and I've heard it is hard to adopt a child if you're single, I'm not sure about a handicapped child but i know they prefer couples over a single person.

You have to fulfil a certain criteria but it is easy as there are lots of kids needing adoption.Anyone withou a criminal record is accepted. Also foster care is required.

Don't you think it's a good idea if the child has a mum & dad
