I certainly would say it doesn't hurt. Do yourself a favor and check many sites for prep info, especially in regards to oral interviews, psych and other associated testing. I am currently in background checks and hope to continue onto those I have listed above and then to academy. I have come to realize how important it is to have time to prep in other areas, but as I have made this career shot at 34 w/o prior law enforcement experience, I'm kinda winging it. I think it is in your best interests to have community experience (church, boy scouts, big brother, volunteer @ Y, etc.) . Take many ride alongs and get to know perspective depts chain of command and history. Practice Practice Practice oral interview alot....sell yourself ! Stick to your guns and don't give up, a dept will be fortunate to get you/experience such as yours. If rejected, press on! It WILL happen. Search the web heavily for info. After reading other post I had to edit. You can not just become a Detective, as stated by some1 else, those are ranks that are earned from w/n the dept, you would go through another "board" for those appointments. Your background doesn't guarantee anything, get some definite "life experience". Many are rejected due to simply their young age and no "life experience" (i.e. people/community)

Most jobs don't even require any of that. You are well beyond basic hiring, unless you are looking to go federal, and with your credentials, might not be a bad idea. DEA, Secret Service, ATF etc...NYC hires with a pulse and 60 college credits. All the rest is nice, but not needed.

FYI, You can't start "higher up". Detective is an appointed, earned designation that requires demonstrated investigatory skills. Many of the top first grade detectives in NYC have a high school diploma. Other ranks are usually based on civil service exams after a few years of street work. People watch to much TV. You can't transfer to another dept and become a dectective right away like on TV. Case in point. The chief from Maryland who headed the sniper case moved to Hawaii and became a cop and he had to start from the ground up as a rookie.

sure it will help but by no means mistake education from a book for the real deal..i went to college for criminal justice too then started working with kids in mental health facilities...education and real life experience have truly no relation...the job its self will probably teach you more as you go then any book or teacher ever could just keep that in mind!

As long as you are physically fit and over 21 you should have no problems. Big cities are easier to find a position.
Ask your professors for advice too.
