As a personal trainer I get asked this question almost every day. The deal with Creatine is that, in and of itself, it will NOT make you bigger. What it does is give your muscles a little extra fuel for energy, that in turn allows you to work them harder, and that is how you get bigger: by being able to lift more weight, or do that extra repition or two. If you just take creatine and do light workouts with weight, it will probably not bulk you up. You have to work your muscles to exhaustion in order for it to kick in. As far as cost, there are many ways to take it: either in a powder you can mix for a drink or smoothie, or in pill form. Either way it shouldn't cost much more than $30 for a two-month supply, if you're taking it 3-4 days a week. Take it about an hour or so before working out. Don't bother taking it on days you don't exercise, as it will do nothing.

Research has shown that creatine supplementation works for athletes performing anaerobic activity to gain muscle mass. What it's shown to do is create a positive nitrogen and ATP balance in the system, which promotes protein synthesis and reduces protein breakdown. It's also shown to help muscles cells to uptake nutrients by creating an osmosis effect by overhydration.

Studies have also shown creatine to be safe. Creatine is a substance naturally produced by the human body in the liver, and is also found in most meats.

Usually I've found the cost to be around $30 US for about a two-three months supply for creatine monohydrade, the most common form of creatine supplement. Creatine ethyl esther, a supplement becoming more popular, may be a little more.

For the monohydrate formula, most people need to load up on it the first week (take an excess) since the monohydrate form is difficult for the body to absorb. After the loading phase, a more normal dosage is appropriate. CEE (ethyl esther) form supposedly doesn't require as much of a loading phase because it already contains a ethyl esther molecule (helps bind the creatine). Creatine taken before and after the workout is most common. I personally do take it on non-workout days, but not everyone agrees with this. It's also been shown that cycling off creatine for a week or two after about five weeks of taking it is most benificial.

Most studies have shown it to be safe, though very few long-term studies have been done. Again, it's a naturally occuring substance produced by the body, and is NOT a steriod. Some side effects such as cramping and the ubiquitous "creatine bloat" are experienced by some individuals. Most bodybuilders and powerlifters take it or have taken it.

Good luck!

Creatine is alright for getting stronger, but just taking it will not cause you to gain weight. Creatine allows your muscles to rebound more quickly after workouts, therefore allowing you to work the same muscles more frequently. Working out more often will obviously allow you to get stronger quicker, and in turn gain muscle weight. There are no serious side effects to creatine, though it can cause diarrhea. The cost varies greatly, but you're looking at about $30 for a decent-quality powder. If you plan to lift weights on a regular basis, my recommendation would be to take creatine and a Whey protein supplement together. The creatine will allow you to recover more quickly, and the protein will feed your muscles. For your body weight, try to get about 100 grams of protein in your diet every day. You'll see results!!

1. Well, it stores "energy" for muscles. The more it stores, the bigger your muscles get.

2. That depends. At my local Wal-Mart here in Ontario, Canada, I can get 1000g of Creatine for $35. Ouch.

3. Nothing. It's a solid suppliment in a pill.

4. Anything is safe in moderation. If you take too much it can be harmful, but I'm sure people who have experience with this will be able to help.

it does not make you bigger. It just increases your endurance and allows you perform longer(more reps), which inturn makes you bigger. It only works for aerobic exercise, not anaerobic. It also cuts down on muscle recovery time.
I think about $30/bottle, which will last about a month. I think.
It is still unsure to exactly what long term effects it can have. I would not suggest taking it until you have begun a workout routine for several months. In the intial stages you will grow fast, but will plateau, then that is when you use it. Also, take it one month on, one or two months off.

No, it will not make you taller and it is a steroid.

You might be better off discussing taking Human Growth Hormone with your doctor.
