Why doesnt Coke and Pepsi find a different sweetner that is safe instead of using Aspartame knowing how harmful it is, and they keep playing it down, like its safe when it isnt? I started looking in my kitchen at all the products that contained Aspartame including my coffee sweetners to even my instant oatmeal. This is a scary and frightening issue, knowing of all the serious side effects it can cause, and people Im sure are buying it everyday, and taking it home to their families not even realizing what it is capable of doing! If anyone is not aware of the dangers, they should go to Aspartame, Nutrasweet, and the dangers of consumption, and check out what all illnesses they can cause. What does anyone else think of this? Any Opinions?

That is an excellent question, especially since they created Splenda and other safer sweetners. Really, though, the only people originally intended for artificial sweetners were diabetics. Everyone else should probably control their calories by good old moderation. I never paid attention to it untill I found out I was pregnant and trying to see what I could and couldn't have. I was shocked and dismayed at what I had been putting into my body the past few years, all in the name of saving a few calories. Anyway, I believe you are right about banning harmfull sweetners. They probably don't because there is still too much money in it and not enough awareness against it.

They(coke and pepsi) don't care because they are making too much money. Some people are aware of the dangers and still drink the stuff anyway. If they could find a better sweetener that would taste good and be good for you I'm sure they'd use it. These days the people who drink diet drinks with that stuff in it are more concerned with their weight than the long term results the aspartme could have. I know because I am guilty of drinking them for this reason, even though I know about the sweeteners.

In order for aspartame to be harmfull, it would have to be ingested at a quantity that no human would ever approach, like 2 kilos a DAY(given that one Diet Coke has maybe a gram of aspartame in it, you'd have to drink 2000 Diet Cokes a day to give yourself cancer). And Coke, Pepsi, Diet-Rite, and several other sodas now come sweetened with Splenda, a brand of sucralose that is completely harmless and IMHO, way better-tasting.

I have heard it isn't necessarily good for anyone, it was ideally made for diabetics. The people who are most likely to suffer from its harm are children. I agree that major companies use them because they are making billions of dollars. They also can because the government doesn't put a ban on them. It is scary when you read the label on just about any product nowadays. All the things they put in food to make the colour different or make it last longer. I guess you just have to watch what you consume and share your knowledge with those you care about. My father in law drinks diet pepsi like its going out of style. We tell him all the time that aspartame is not good for him, especially in such large quantities. But he continues to drink it.

It hasn't actually been scientifically proven that aspartame, Equal, Sweet N Low and crap like that causes any catastrophic illnesses. But I have a feeling that if you just shoveled this stuff in for like 2 months, everyday, all day, I mean you ate nothing but aspartame, you would start to see some effects.
