My friend keeps on asking me if it is OK if she finds little strands of gray in her hair every once in a while and I really don't know what to tell her. So, if anyone can give me some good advice on if it is normal or not that would be great.

If she keeps getting gray hairs all over her head, it is likely a genetic condition as many others have said, and there isn't a lot that can be done for it. Having said that though a *lot* of people have some premature greying of the hair and don't look the worse for it. *Many* people go for this look *on purpose* by streaking, bleaching or dyeing their hair. :)

If it is coming in a few streaks or so....you might want to ask what's going on in her life, in terms of diet or in terms of stress, as both a poor diet and a really stressful home life can lead to greying of the streaky sort. And really the best way to correct that is by virtue of correcting her diet or underlying stress....

One thing that hasn't been mentioned though...try helping her find a shampoo, conditioner or hair mousse that has a sunblock in it, as sunlight in general will fade hair out and make any grayness even more obvious.

Hope this helps, and have a good one! :)

It's nothing to worry about and certainly doesn't mean that she'll go gray early. I started getting gray hairs when I was about 9, and every so often I see a new one coming in. I don't have any more gray now than I did then, I'm 19 now. I don't know for sure, but I think it's just the hair pigmentation being very light.

I had one when i was 16 and never really had too much more til i was 40. Tell her not to worry about it...
...and if she ever did gray early it can be found by others to be attractive as it is rare on a younger person. I have seen a few early grayers and thought the look was stunning (in a good way).

There have also been studies done that found in the business world younger people with gray hair, were promoted quicker, if they are doing as good as job as the next person.

It's totally normal. When I was nine or ten, I started getting gray and white hair strands every once in a while, it shouldn't be a big problem.

The hair has a tendency to lose its natural colour with advancing age and turn grey, but premature greying is a morbid condition and it makes even the young look older. The hair is an appendage of the skin. It is composed of the same kinds of cells as are found in the outer layer of the skin, which is known as the epidermis. Hair grows from hair follicles which are deep recesses in the epidermis. The sebaceous glands of the scalp secrete an oily substance called sebum, which is the source of nutrition, lustre, and blackness of the hair. The hair cannot be fed externally, for such nourishment, as the scalp requires, must come to it from the bloodstream

Tell your friend to not worry about it. Some people say if you find gray hairs that means your getting smarter.
