The main meaning of the word translated as children (bane) is son. More specificaly this refers to one who carries on the family. This count would not include women nor children (ironicly). It is very likely that the cause of difference is that the standards of who is man and who is child was different between the two writters. While in modern jewish customes, the right of passage to adulthood is at a set age, at that time it was not the case.

The importance is not the exact number of people who returned from exile, it is that people returned at all.

The source I have says that it was probably scribal error. As you say that you are a Bible student, the becomes important to weigh the value of the error that has been known and discovered by Bible scholars years ago. What we prove here is that the Bible is not the "Inerrant word of God" that many fundies claim, but it is a group of books written over different periods of time by different authors and copied many times over.

I am a Christian who does not believe what the fundies say, and I still know that Jesus is the Lord with overwhelming confidence.

We don't know how many.
Ezra was counting backwards toward those coming from Babylon.
Nehemiah was counting forwards to those who could live in Jerusalem.
The territory covered, based on town list, is different.
One most likely contains Samaritans and the other doesn't.

For fools only, Nine hundred and fourty-five the people of Zattu. Eight hundred and fourty-five the sons of Zattu. Read it again. No apology needed.
