I am a public school teacher, but I would really love to teach a smaller group of students and have more flexibility. Has anyone ever heard of teachers working for a few families as a homeschool teacher?

I am not looking to tutor my own students, rather, looking ahead to next year to teach homeschool students part time and possibly have another part time job as well.

I know that in the Northwest, there are a bunch of homeschooling groups called Family Academy or Academy Northwest. and they allow you to teach a group of students, however many you can sign up or want. and you meet with them 1 or 2 times a week and give them their assignments. I dont know the website but you could google Academy Northwest and you'll find it.

Some homeschool groups hold classes for the group one or two days a week. Sometimes this is done as a co-op with parents teaching their topics of strength or interest. Sometimes a teacher is hired and a small fee collected from the students. I've heard of one couple who run high school labs out of their shop for homeschool students as their business but most situations seem very part-time.

I haven't heard of any. Mainly there are co ops where home schooling families get together to have their children work on specific subjects. These lean toward music and drama but can include any variety of subjects. As far as an employment opportunity, I don't think there would be much in this area. Unless you're willing to work for peanuts or donate your time, these co ops usually ask for a donation from the families just large enough to cover lease cost of a building and utilities. This is coming from someone in the St Louis area, things may be different in your area. Hope this helps.

yes, there are. My friend sent her children to something like that, where everyone pitched in to pay the teacher's salaries...several families shared..try some education or parenting magazines or websites for more information. I think there is probably a homeschooling network or something for people who homeschool to get help and support. I think it is a great idea, and I will homeschool my kids, when i have them.

Yes, there are things like that set up. Get in touch with local homeschool support groups and tell them about what you can offer and what they might be seeking in terms of classes. They might want something specific like a writing class or math class or a projects class... What you might do will depend a lot on what is wanted.

I would check with Sylvan.com to see if there is something you can do with them, or even other college prep websites such as kaplan or something like that.

If you notice some students are having difficulty in your classes I don't know if you can ethically help them out at their homes and get paid for it since you're supposed to be helping them to the best of your abilities at the school anyway.
