Are people from England called British, or are people from Britain called English

From England - English
Scotland - Scottish / Scots
Wales - Welsh
Northern Ireland - Irish / Northern Irish (later rarely used)

The first three are Great Britain. The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The two islands (so England, Wales, Scotland, NI and the Republic or Ireland ) are refered to as the British Isles in geography/meteorology.

There are also dependent territories like the Channel Islands.

"British" can be applied to all of these except the Republic of Ireland, a separate country ("the Irish").

Although there are some sensitivities about this at times. e.g. Scottish Nationalists prefer to be called Scottish, and not British, at all times.

PS I am British, with English and Welsh blood...unlike I suspect some of the earlier, ill-informed respondents!

Several people got this wrong I see. Yes people from England are english and all of them are by definition also British. The people from Scotland and Wales are also British as they are part of Great Britain. However Northern Ireland is NOT part of Britain it is part of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". All of these terms are Geopolitical terms and to throw something else in the mix..... The two islands of Britain and Ireland make up the British Isles which is a geographical term, but that does not make the people of Ireland Bristish!!!!!

British refers to anyone from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales or England. Specifically, only people from England can be called English. People from Northern Ireland are Irish, those from Scotland are Scots or Scottish (NOT Scotch which is a drink) and those from Wales are Welsh.
