There are both very good and very bad areas. I have a cousin who lives on the water in Tottenville. This is a great area - gorgeous homes - two blocks from the Staten Island Rapid Transit train. The stores remind me of old Route 17 upstate New York - real country flavor. The area at the ferry is St George - very crowded and parts are rundown. There are projects - high crime rate there. The Staten Island Zoo has a great reptile collection.

Granted, there might be one bad spot but Staten Island isn't bad.
The reason why people poke fun at it is because the borough is very distant from the other 4 boroughs of NYC. The subways don't run there (they have the Staten Island Railway....their "subway") and unless you take the ferry, you always have to pay to get in or out.
On another front, Staten Island does have a lot of Italians and some that have lived (or still live) there have.....connections. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano lived near a friend's home there.

I happen to really like Staten Island. I love that it's 'out of the way' and that it's not accessible by subway, and that you have to pay to drive in ($9!) Why do I love this? Because it filters out the undesirables. Unless you live near the ferry, the South Shore (the greater part of Staten Island ---connected to New Jersey) is out of your league. The streets are clean, there is not too much traffic, everyone actually speaks English, people take pride in their homes, and life is quieter. A great place to live, and I am buying a house in the South Shore of Staten Island as soon as I can afford it!

My chum, no longer somewhat. a great form of general human beings got here from the boroughs. some have been born on the island, at the same time as the two others lived there for a time or grew up on the island. subsequently, don't experience undesirable considering which you grew up in Staten Island. Be happy with the borough you got here from. sturdy good fortune close by New Yorker

Horrible place. Like most of NYC. New Jersey wouldn't have it. That's why New Jersey puts all of the oil refineries right up against Staten Island. Best place for them.

Threes a bad part of every city you go to. But Staten Island isn't that bad.
Everyone there has a very thick accent and has a thick Italian heritage,

We just say it's bad because it's so weird and it's hard to get to. It doesn't really fit with the NYC vibe. It would make more sense to me if it were part of New Jersey. As for it actually being 'bad', it's not. It's just not what I would call a fun or cool place to live. It just feels like another world when I go there. It might as well be 1000 miles away.

I don't live there either, but I drive through there fairly often.
Seems like any other place ... some good spots, some bad ... kinda like NYC

I'm sure there are still crimes there but everyone probably thinks its bad because of the famous game: Grand Theft Auto, Liberty Cities. you cause all the crime there.
