Granted that we all know 'Indians' turned out to be a misnomer, forcing a new lable on people isn't something I want to do either. Over the holidays someone at a dinner I was at said they had been told that Native Americans preferred to be called 'Indians' which is why that reference rather than 'Native American' is to be found on most of the casinos.
I was wondering, is that true?

Thanks for the answers. 'First Nations' is good, so you can refer to them collectively. We used to call them 'Indian Nations' but that brings us back to the 'Indian' issue...

I prefer to be refered to as American. I am a member of both the Choctaw and Cherokee tribes and have found that there is no certain answer as people vary in there opinions and preferences. In general conversation the term tribal or tribes works most of the time but as per my previous statement you wont be able to please everyone with one label. If you know a tribal member then ask that person what his or her preference is. One thing is for certain though, dont expect us to help you celebrate Columbus day.

When I lived and worked among the Navajo people, I had the very same question. The Navajos I had asked preferred to be called "Navajo", with "Indian" as a second choice. If you know the tribe of the people or person you are referring to, try to be as specific as possible. I got the impression that they didn't very much appreciate labels assigned for the sake of being PC.

Native Americans definately!!!! The only reason people call them that is because columbus called them that because he thought he was in india. I've talked to a few and they really hate being called indian.

I'd think they should be called "sir" since they were here first and deserve the respect that entails. God knows we treat them like horse pucky and turn around and treat a bunch of illegal Mexicans like they're gods. What the hell's wrong with this country that we treat the native indigenous people like crap and a bunch of criminals from Mexico like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread?
And in case any one cares, I'm a liberal Democrat - so not all of us are pro-illegal.

The term Indian can create some confusion, since it also references people from India.

i would think Native Americans sense it is on the casinos. we have Indians from India and then you have the Mexicans claiming the Native blood in America. i use Native Americans to identify the real Native Americans from the fakes. the Native Americans have my respect.

Native Americans.... they find Indian's insulting... i don't know why but when i learned about christopher columbus and i learned about the "Native American's" too.

Cherokee, Muscogee, Cree, ect. I think most Native Americans feel that is preferrable.
