You mean schizophrenia. It is one of the most commonly known mental illnesses. Schizophrenia is hard not to notice, it's symptons are very blatant. Schizophrenia is usually accompanied with paranoia, thus many schizophrenics are diagnosed Paranoid Schizophrenia. Most schizophrenics hear voices and see visions. These symptons are called hallucinations. In additions to hearing voices and seeing visions they can also taste, and feel things that are not there, these are called tactile hallucinations. It's not known for sure what causes schizophrenia. Yet, many believe it is caused by a chemical imbalance. Ironically, many schizophrenics and some other forms of mental illnesses share having been abused (usually sexually) in common. For more informatin on this subject I would suggest taking a trip to your local library. I agree schizophrenia as well as many other mental disorders are very interesting.

Schizophrenia is a group of related disorders of unknown causes in which there are special types of disordered thinking, affect and behavior. Usually patients exhibit disturbances of content of t hought with delusions, such as the feeling that thoughts have been inserted into their head and are now being broadcast to the world. They may feel persecuted and believe there is a big conspiracy to kill them. Speech may be coherent in actual words used but entirely unassociated with reality. Or, the patient may be mute or completely incoherent. Perception is disordered by all forms of hallucinations. Affect may be flat or inappropriate to the situation. There is loss of a feeling of identity, and self-direction may be disturbed. All activity may be disturbed so that the ability to work or carry a task to completion is severely impaired. The patient may be catatonic or otherwise unaware of his or her surroundings. Usually, these disturbances are present for six months before the diagnosis of schizophrenia is accepted. Prognosis is usually poor, but, over a 25- to 30- year period, about one third of patients will show recovery or remission. It usually occurs equally in males and females and at any age, but the usual age of admission to a hospital is 28 to 34. It occurs more frequently in the lowest socioeconomic groups. There is little doubt that genetic factors are important in schizophrenia, but the precise mode of inheritance has not been determined.
Treatment includes supportive psychotherapy for the patient and the family, antipsychotic drugs used in the lowest effective dose.
Catatonic schizophrenia is symptomized by catatonic stupor or mutism, negativism, rigidity, excitement, posturing. These patients need careful attention to prevent hurting themselves or others, and to treat malnutrition, exhaustion, hyperpyrexia, or injury.
Disorganized schizophrenics are characterized by incoherence, grossly disorganized behavior, flat or inappropriate affect, fragmented delusions, stereotyped behavior with grimaces, mannerisms, and social withdrawal.
Paranoid schizophrenics have delusions of persecution, grandiosity, jealousy, or hallucinations with persecutory or grandiose content.
Undifferentiated schizophrenics have delusions, incoherence, or grossly disorganized behavior. it does not meet the criteria for some other types of schizophrenic disorders.
Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. It is usually a lifelong diagnosis and requires intensive therapy.
