My dobe just turned 1 year (female). When strangers come over or we are outside and someone walks by, she kinda wants nothing to do with it like she is scared or something. Does the protectiveness come with age or what? She is a sweet dog, but isn't there a time when she needs to be protective? Is there something that I need to do? We take her for walks and she meets a few people from time to time, but she never got testy with anyone yet. We have a min pin who is the opposite, when the doorbell rings, she goes bannanas!

You *don't* need to teach a dog to be protective, they are naturally. The main thing is maturity, give her another year and you'll see a difference. She'll start 'alarm barking' when people are near/on your property. That's all she needs to do...unless there's a real threat. She sounds a bit shy, so it would help if you could get her out and socialize her...it won't affect her protectivemess in a negative way. In fact, she'll learn to tell the difference between normal/good and abnormal/bad behavior. Obedience (even basic) is good too, it builds confidence.

I am sorry to say this, but just because the dog is a doberman doesnt mean that the dog itself will be protective. There are two possible explanations to this:

1.) The dog has not sensed that you need immediate protection

or

2.) The dog is a very friendly dog who was born to be sweet and friendly

Good luck!

Well the reson is you need to train her to protect the house ASAP because dogs are the cause of a dangerous situation shes there for you and your family when something goes wrong. And did you know the Min Pin and the Doberman Pinscher are not related? Have any questions? Im here to answer them!

I had a female dobe that was shy, but loved people and was great around kids (actually I was a kid), but if any one tried to hurt me, she would lay in to them. That was a great dog. Your dog sounds the same. Just be patint, and I am sure if the time comes you need protecting, She will be there for you. male dobies are not as reliale in the protective area. They are just giant lap dogs.

Every dog is different. If your Dobie is a member of the family and bonded to you, if she determines you are being threatened, she will act.

You really don't want a dog that just gets defensive with everyone. That is very dangerous and likely to get you sued.
Trust your dog.

All dogs are different. Your dobe probably only gets protective when she senses something is wrong or dangerous. Or, she might just be a coward herself.

well it seems to me that you have a good dog you should be happy that she isn't aggresive with others. i'm sure if anyone tried to hurt you or anyone else in your home she would go bananas too. you could try some training exercises with her. have your significant other smack you on your leg and say ouch repeatedly holler for her and ask her for help. this simple exercise is very effective it shows her that she should come to your rescue. repeat the exercise with everyone in the home. she will get more aggresive as she gets older exspecially after she has her first liter of puppies. good luck

Sounds like you have done an excellent job socializing your dog. Dobies have an instinct to be protective, but they are pack animals and do what the leader tells them. You have shown the dog you are the protector and have taught it to not be agressive. You have a pet, and sounds like a lovely one. You don't need an agressive protector.

you may think this is nuts but the other dog is doing that and the DOB just let that be her job. and that's nice that it is socializing. as for aging, yes she will be more alert and warn you if some one is trying to get into the house. the other dog just did that and the DOB is a newer addiction so there are rules that dogs set between their selves. so do not worry your DOB will let you know if something is wrong.
