this video will give you some tips and dealing with leg cramps:

the biggest thing is stretching the muscle that's cramping. so if it's the gastrocnemius, pull your toes upwards. drinking 60 oz + of water a day will probably help, too. cramps are a common sign of dehydration. if you also have frequent headaches that's what's causing it. also, try eating more bananas. potassium is the chemical needed for the muscle to stop contracting.

You may want to see a doctor and tell them of this, you may have poor leg circulation which may lead to heart problems or possibly a stroke. For leg cramps try to get more potassium, NOT more sodium. Eat some bananas. See a doctor though to make sure it doesn't lead to something more serious.

It may be just a shortage of potassium in your diet. Try eating a banana a day or increasing your milk or citrus intake. Once your k levels are up you should notice a difference, if not consult a physician. He might suggest a multi vitamin taken with food. Good luck.

You are not breathing in properly while sleeping. When you are about to get up, all on a sudden, when you inhale the fresh morning air which is rich in oxygen, you get the cramp. The reason is that the calf muscles are unable to cope up with the sudden intake of oxygen. So what you do is, while getting up,breath-in in small cycles and then take a long gulp of fresh air in; you will be alright. Try it and tell me, if you are happy.

I never found anything that helped with mine. You can try gently stretching your calves before bed. I've heard and read that that can help. Also, I've read that standing on a cold surface can help.
