I would have told him the truth and afterwards reported him to his superior. Religion should not be a basis for hire or fire, but rather if you can do the job that they are asking you to do. If in fact he acted in this way is an indication that he is not a christian himself and therefore needs to examine himself to see if he is in the faith or not.
Sorry you went through this. Not everyone that calls themselves a christian are really chrisitians. I think this is what gives chrisitanity a bad rap with most people that don't believe.

That all depends on the situation and the type of job that's being offered because some jobs have different requirements. Most Christians would pray and seek God's guidance in a situation like that.
For example a friend of mine took in a tenant once and I took the call for them. The guy who had called late and sounded very irresponsible. I almost didn't give the message to my friend because something inside me said this guy is bad news.
The other thoughts were maybe I should give this guy a chance. Well it turns out I should have tried much harder talking my friend out of taking this guy in because he turned out to be a lot of trouble.
When I sense something is not right then I question it more before I jump in because I learnt a valuable lesson. So if God warned me that hiring the person is not the right person then I wouldn't hire them whether they were a christian or not.
It makes no difference unless I consult with God first. He's the boss!

It depends on the job. In most circumstances, I would not hire an atheist to work in a church or a religious based company or group. But for anything else, I would care more about how well the job gets done that what my employee's faith is.
As for what you should or shouldn't have done, well, yes, it was wrong to lie, but if you do not believe in God, than why does that matter to you? As long as you are not really hurting anyone and you do not think you are accountable to a deity, it is not logical to worry about that. I believe that morality is imporant, but only because I believe in God and that He is moral. I am not saying that you should ignore your concience, but if you think that there is a such thing as right or wrong, perhaps you ought to evaluate why and why anyone would have a concience if we evolved in a dog eat dog world off of the pure concept that we need to survive.
In either case, the right thing to do would be to tell the truth (you could always sue, complain, or threaten to sue if he/she chose to discriminate against you because of that). And yes, I would hire a hard working, honest, and qualified atheist for a job that has nothing to do with religion or spirituality and no, I would not fire someone for a job that has nothing to do with faith simply because they were an atheist.

I would not want to work for that boss. It should not matter what "religion" you follow, as long as you are qualified for the position you are applying for... religion should not be in the equation.
I'm a Christian, I've worked with different people of different religious backgrounds. If you are a good worker, I would not fire you. If you are a lazy worker, you would be fired only due to your work behavior.... not your religious background.
Your boss is in violation of the ethics of hiring/firing a person. Talk about a lawsuit... on discrimination!

I have hired and fired atheists, Christians and Muslims. It was never based on religious grounds as that would be illegal. I have found good workers and bad workers in all faiths. A worker is judged on his or her merits everywhere I have ever been. It affects too many lives to have bias in such a decision. You should always tell the truth.

Im a Christian and never asked anyone I was hiring what religion they were. I hire people if they seem capable of the job, fire them if they're not. Religion has nothing to do with it.

ya, if someone fires u because of your religion, then u can sue them. thats why people aren't technically supposed to ask u that in all the interviews before they hire u. and personally yes, i would hire an athiest, and i would fire them only if they were doina bad job, or if i had a good reason to.

I am not christian but I think they shouln't fire people who don't believe in god. Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want. That shouldn't interfer with getting fired or hire in a job. ;)

I don't care what religion my employees are, as long as they do a good and honest job. So my answer is (1) yes, (2) no, (3) if you really thought you'd get fired, then no.

It is illegal for him to do that. Yes, I would hire them and if they didn't do their job right I would also fire them but not because of the way they believed.
