You are talking about a film SLR.

This is a good time to get one, as people are dumping their film systems and switching to digital, and at this point, film processing should be around for a few more years, at least.

Try www.keh.com to find a reliable used film SLR. They are a reliable, honest company with many satisfied customers and a long history. They rate used equipment fairly, and have a generous return policy.

If you want to shop for a new film SLR, try www.bhphoto.com. Utterly reliable and best real prices. There are just not too many camera companies still making film cameras. Nikon has discontinued everything but the F6, their top of the line, and one manual camera actually made by Cosina. Unless you want to learn photography 101 to start with, I would not recommend getting a manual camera. You have to learn what you're doing to get good pictures out of a manual camera. Not a bad thing, but i get the feeling you are just wanting good snaps. Most auto cameras also can be set to manual when you're ready to take control.

Also, Canon is still making the film Rebel. You can find one at Wallyworld or a big box retailer. The kit lens that comes with it is nothing to brag about, but it will get you started, and in the neighborhood of $250.

If you're going to have a decent camera, you may as well learn how to use it. So invest in a beginner's photography book while you're at it. And read and study your camera's manual. Learn what the settings are and how they affect your pictures.

Then find a good lab to process your film into prints. Labs are not all equal, and how your pictures look has a lot to do with who is printing them. If your pictures look crappy, ask for reprinting, or take the negatives to another lab and compare.

Good luck!
