I have a German Shepard who goes jogging with me (on a leash) every day. Occassionally someone yells "Don't worry, he's friendly," as their dog comes running out of the yard after us. My dog is not friendly to other dogs, which is why he is always restrained. He is not vicious, but takes time to socialize to other dogs and will be aggressive at first. I keep him under control when it happens, but what if the "nice" dog doesn't get the hint? I don't want to try to separate my dog from a fight because other people decide their dog is friendly enough that the leash law does not apply to them. I carry Muzzle pepper spray just in case, but I don't want to ever have to use it. Does anyone else have this problem?

In some neighborhoods you dont even have to have a dog and some of these idiot people let their dogs walk right up to you with the hackles up on their back and state he's friendly . well i dont care how friendly your dog is he can still bite . stupid people think cause a dog is friendly it wont bite it can bite . I want to slap stupid people that think like that . good luck .

This happens to me all the time , it drives me crazy when it happens i usually hold my dogs muzzle and try and tell the owners who usually just stare at me without a clue to restrain their dogs. That has to be the worst way to have two dogs meet. These are the same people that will sue you for vet bills after their dog gets bit.
My dog has issues with kids and I am very careful of this because she has shown signs of this in the past and you wouldn't believe how many parents will let their kids run up to my dog while on leashed walks, when I back away and explain the situation they look at me as if I am nuts. Stupid people!!!!

Because they don't understand that a dog is not a human being and they are obviously putting human values on the animals back.
So the dog is nice. Nice dogs bite too. I have been asked often if my dog bites. My answer is always the same, "all dogs bite" I don't care how well trained my dogs are or how nice they are. They are dogs!
People do not understand that the pets of the canine world are dogs. That is probably why they believe it is alright to let them loose in the neighbourhood.
They don't know any better.

I agree... this drives me crazy!

I get this a lot at the vet as well... I have a well-mannered Basset Hound who sits at my feet while we're waiting. If we take a seat near the door, absolutely EVERYONE who enters allows their dog to immediately leap onto mine.

My Basset shows obvious signs of irritation... he's not in the least agressive, but he doesn't like to be harrassed when he's minding his own business. It usually takes at LEAST a rude look at the owner before they'll pull their dog off of mine.

Now, my Rottweiler was a different story. I'd walk him around the neighborhood, restrained, as well... and people would be out watering their gardens or whatnot, and sit there and WATCH like an idiot as their little Chihuahua or Shih-Tzu ran right up to my Rottweiler! They could SEE from his expression and posture that he wasn't happy about it. And, of course, if my dog would have had the notion to attack, it would be OUR FAULT... not the stupid people who don't have the sense to keep their dog on a leash or in the house!

My suggestion:

THEM: Don't worry... he's frieldly!
YOU: (Cheerfully.) Mine's not!

Haha... good luck to you.

I live on a corner lot and there is this moron in the neighborhood that walks 2 labs on those retractable leashes every day. And every day, he lets them walk halfway up into my yard and i have asked him not to do that b/c my dog does not leave the yard, but at the same time does not want other dogs in her yard. People are ignorant and i cant stand them.

Yes, I do. I found I have to change my walking route because another dog was not on a leash. I found people just believe they are not causing a problem because their dog doesn't need to be restrained. And I found, it wasn't worth arguing about.
