They will not really look for him. Only if he gets into some kind of trouble. That could be as simple as getting a traffic ticket. They won't look for him.
Nothing will happen to the family of the UA service member either. Its not their cause. If its just a simple UA he has 29 days to be UA after 30 days he is considered a deserter. Technically, since there is a war on and he deserted...he could be put to death...legally by military standards. But chances are they won't. If he comes back within the 30 day window...he will get restriction and move on...unless he is a constant trouble maker...if he comes back after 30 days he is a deserter and they will send him to the brig and begin to process him out with either OTH (other than honorable) or BCD (bad conduct discharge)...that one is the one you don't want.
Either which way you look at its not pleasant..but he should stand up and be a man and face his responsibilities and go back and fix it. He was a big enough boy to sign up for military duty he now needs to be a man and fix it while the problem is small. When it snowballs..there is no stopping it. And he can't run forever...

They will be thrown in jail, teir property siezed and their friends will be raped and tortured. Oh thats right, that doesn't happen here, contrary to all the america/bush haters.

Nothing happens to anyone but him. He'll get some minor brig time, depending on reasons and how long he stays UA. He should turn himself in to the closest law eforcement ASAP before it gets worse. They will issue a warrant for him and local law enforcement can arrest him and extradite him. Not fun. A dishonorable discharge ruins your life. Its worse than having a felony record.

they put out a watch for him with the local police and sheriffs and a pick-up hold with the local law around his house and so on then they call the house to ask them to send him to the court or jail the family cant be harrassed but they do sometimes come into the residance with a warrant as in any case , now he can be tried for a civilianoffence if he resists and the marines on shore patrol will beat him and keep him in local jails as they take him back to be chatrged and then he could be thrown out or do time in a labor battalion then time in leavonworth if he goes to like the local police after a bit of time off and surrenders they wont beat him when they come for him have him lie that he heard his girlfriend was going to quit him and he ran to see her and get it straight that means the guys from the marines will not kick him around and the captain that takes half his pay for two months and drops his rank one down and sends him to do labor for 20 or thirty days wont be hateing him while they punish him but if he doesnt give up the butte whoopins wont end for a good while ,,

As long as they don't knowingly assist him in remaining UA, nothing. And yes, they will look for him. They will notify local authorities in his home town and will likely interview his family members and friends. Best bet is to advise him to turn himself in and take it like a man.

They will put a warrent out for him, as long as the family didn't help, nothing happens to the family.
