You might consider a few flying lessons before starting your project. They will help you decide if flying is your cup of tea. Go to the "Airdrome Aeroplane" website and see if you like any of Bob's (Robert Baslee, rbaslee@peoplepc.com) designs. These are sold in little kits for step-by-step assembly. This will end up as an investment of around $10,000. There are a couple of things about aviation that you should know. One is that it is never cheap to fly. I knew a couple of gentlemen years ago that thought they could cut corners and costs on their airplane. They crashed it on take-off and died. This leads into the second thing about aviation. Flying is an activity the has no forgiveness for mistakes. A little boo-boo could cost you your life.
As for building an airplane, this is no easy undertaking (couldn't resist the pun). Try a local aviation school to learn the mechanical basics. To get an airframe and power plant license takes a minimum of two years.....and it is not easy.
The question is not a stupid one. Everyone has to start somewhere, and a dream is as good a place as any. I was flying a Cessna 152 at age 17, so give following your dreams a try.

We don't have the answer to this kid... But you keep thinking about it, scratch down a few notes and keep thinking about it. You will eventually have your answer. Basicaly you have the same question as the Wrights, and well its hard to tell you how to be the next Kelly Johnson, Igor Sikorsky, or Burt Rutan.
Best of luck and never stop asking stupid questions.

If you do try the ballon thing with a lawn chair, make sure you don't drop your BB gun like the guy did in Arizona(?).
