The best way is to lose weight SLOWLY! Don't expect to lose weight in 2 weeks and be the skinny beach hussy that you see every summer. Losing weight and keeping it off is a commitment.

First...Either see a nutritionist to help you come up with a good meal plan to follow OR make up your own using tools online (and common sense). She/he will help you figure out what you need to eat every day to get the nutrients you need to be healthy. If you don't want to see a nutritionist, simply follow the food chart. Simple--sort of--you still need to watch your portion sizes! Switch to smaller plates and utensils. Drink plenty of water.

Second...Set up a workout/exercise plan. Tell yourself that you'll workout for at least 30 minutes a day OR for 45 minutes for 5 out of the 7 days of the week. To find a proper workout routine, get a personal trainer...but if you're like me, you can't afford those hunky men...so you'll have to rely on yourself to see what works for you and what doesn't. If you own a gym membership (if you don't, it's a good investment if you make the commitment to go--don't waste $40+ a month if you're not going to go) try balancing a routine between 30 minutes of cardio (bike, treadmill, stepper, elliptical) and 15 minutes of lifting. (I know, I said that you should workout at least 30 minutes a day--This is just what I do.) You want to gain muscle--but LEAN muscle. So do A LOT of reps with NOT A LOT of weight.

No gym membership? Don't be scared to run outside..or take walks in the morning or at night after dinner. There are plenty "around the house" exercises that you can do, like Counter Pushups (go to: http://www.aarpmagazine.org/health/Articles/a2004-04-28-mag-cleanlean.html)

You can also purchase workout tapes. Tae Bo is a pretty decent cardio workout, but you can also get Pilates or even Belly Dancing if you want. Anything is available on DVD or VHS if you want a quick, at-home workout.

Third...Take measurements before you start your new diet/exercise program. If you choose to weigh yourself every week, the number may not change at some point (due to muscle gain, mostly)...You maybe be losing INCHES, not weight. Trust me. It's a good self-esteem booster when you want to throw the scale through the window. ;)

Fourth...Don't let yourself get down. Use your friends and family as support. When you workout..think about what you'll look like and how much healthier you'll be!

Hope this helps!

Good luck!

Firstly, do not think you're fat at all. I'm 5'4 and weigh 198. You're a skinny mini. Even before I gained weight when I was working out every day I only weighed 150. So anyway, cut everything you're eating in half and exercise more if you want to become healthy. Try just walking on a treadmill. It worked for my mom. She lost almost 100 pounds by simply cutting her food in half and beginning a new work out schedule.

Fist of all, DO NOT DIET. When you restrict your calories, your body sees itself as starving and lowers your metabolism (how fast you burn calories) to compensate. Eat mor frequent smaller meals, about 5 a day. Every time you have a meal your body raises its' metabolism slightly, so this will help. Also, cut out simple sugars (cookies, cakes and candies), anything made with white flour (your body converts it to sugar too easily), eat whole grain foods instead. Also, soda is really bad - just one can of soda can support about 11lbs. of weight in a body at rest for an entire day.

Only eat when you're hungry (not when you're bored or tired). Cut pop out of your diet (or at least on the weekdays). Work out...even 10 sit-ups every morning will help. Alcohol is a LOT of empty calories; even "light" beer is HORRIBLE for someone's weight. Find a hobby for which you have to use your hands (sewing, knitting, computer/video games, playing cards). It's a lot harder to eat when you can't use your hands.

Best of luck! :)

You are in the perfect weight range for your height. Depending on your frame size (small, medium or large) you should be between 177 and 155. Maybe you just need to tone up.
