It's mostly just a nervous habit. Do you tend to do it more when you are worried about something or in a stressful situation? In any case, it's a gross habit (no offense). You used to be able to buy stuff at the drug store to apply to your nails that had a very nasty taste- basically aversion therapy. You might want to check with the pharmacist at your local drug store to see if the stuff is still available. Good luck and don't give up!

If you make the person wear tape on their fingers for a few days and chew something else, like gum or something, it will help. It takes a lot of will power, when they realize they're doing it, they have to stop right away. They need to consciously remember to stop and not do it. That's what worked for me when I was twelve, and I have nice nails now! Hope this helps.

Paint them with dried banana pepper seed pulp .

slice a tiny one and slowly scrape the seeds out with finger nails.

You won't bite your nails out of habit without being reminded quick. The greater the exposure the more sensitive you get to it and need to use less.

a few hot banana peppers probably cost a buck or so for a year or longer, if you don't eat them in chili first.

You know what? I used to bite my nails my whole life up until last month.

Do you know what made me stop?
My boss at work pointed them out and asked me if I was nervous. He then said that he used to do it, but realized how bad of a habit it was, and stopped. He also said that thats one of the first things he looks at when he meets a person.

So, motivation inspired me to stop. Motivation, inspiration, and willpower.
Pick someone out in your life that you want to impress or would die for. Do it FOR THEM. Say to yourself, "I'm going to stop biting my nails because I love this person."

I know this sounds weird, but it really worked for me.
Good luck. : )
