I have a young son that I want a better life for but I am not sure if i should move or not. Goal is to go to law school so that limits the towns to choose from. Reasons not to stay where I am:
#1 Housing market is outrageous--cannot afford 3 bedroom apartment or to buy home
#2 Schools are failing--local elementary school has 32% passing for English
#3 The city is growing too fast and too big
I currently live in Salt lake City, Utah and want to move in two years but i don't want to make a mistake. I have moved many times and each time i lose more than half my stuff. Can't do that this time. Places I am looking into: Iowa City, IA -- Fayateville, AR -- Concord, NH -- Lincoln, NE . I would love to find a place where you can actually take your kids to the parks without having druggies lounging on top of the restrooms and needles on the swings. Do you have any ideas on a good place to raise a family and go to law school. I would love a smaller town or should I stay?

My son is two years old and I am a single parent so this decision must be mine but I really do not want to make a mistake.

I think its great you're thinking ahead to improve both your own and your son's prospects in life. I'm surprised by your facts about Salt Lake City! Do you have family or friends living where you are or in any of the cities you're considering? (Is your son's father a factor in this decision?) Do you know what law school will definitely accept you? Have you had the opportunity to visit these communities? All these are important considerations but, judging by the negatives you've listed (and no positives!), it seems to me you really are looking to change your/your son's environment.

Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. It's beautiful and has relatively low crime. If there is a murder it's front page news. You don't see any homeless because they have the worlds biggest red cross shelter. It's on Cayuga Lake. There are TONS of parks. Gorges & waterfalls all over. Excellent schools - well, Lansing which is a town just outside of the city has the BEST school. And Cornell has one of the top law schools in the country.

I would suggest moving. I find that towns that are 7, 000 to 13, 000 are nice to live in, and often cheaper to live in as well as far as housing. That is my opinion. I recently moved and didn't get rid of anything.. I moved it all. I was glad I moved. I was worried about making a mistake too. What if I didn't like the new place and I had to move again or be stuck where I don't like it? I was worried, but I moved and i am happy i did. Sometimes in order to fulfill your dreams, you just need to leap...

Think about what you can afford or not afford.
Also think about your son. Is he old enough to have formed friendships? Perhaps you might want to think about if you move, he may lose many friends. My parents moved when I was in the second grade and I lost alot of good friends. I didn't make many friends where I moved to and it affected my self esteem.
This is not meant to be a sob story, but consider it if your son has friends.

Look down towards the south or up north - just check the local rent/home prices before you move. Much of the south is highly affordable - tx, alabama, arkansas, parts of GA, etc. I've been through tx and it's really nice, nice people, and you don't see druggies (or at least I didn't see any).
