We got a quaker from my husbands brother and its bonded with him real well, but not so good for my daughter and I. Well, now at least he will come and sit on me but none of us can pet his head. I'm getting tired of getting bitten, and he bites hard! Hes about 4 or 5 years old and don't seem to have been handeled much.

Is there any way we can get him to let us pet him?

You didn't say how long you have had the bird. They have to get to know you. But sometimes they do bond with just one person. Seeing that you got the bird from your husbands brother , your husband probably reminds the bird of his old owner, so that is why he bonded with him first. Try giving the bird treats, such as sunflower seeds, if you do this every day, maybe he'll get more friendly towards you.

Spending more time with the bird and offering a treat is a start. repetition is the key. Mine likes to be pet upwards not downward like a cat or dog. If the bird bites, don't yell and make a big deal out of it and push toward the bite and he should let go. Mattie Sue Athan's books are such a snore. Bless her parrot pickin' heart. There are forums for these guys that are great. Quakers corner is one. Put it in your search engine. Don't give up and I bet you win that bird over within a month. Have a tweet year.

Most birds do not like to be pet in the sense that you would a dog or a cat, in downward strokes. Mine love being pet on their neck and cheeks using an upward motion , making the feathers go up! But as someone else mentioned he may just need more time getting used to you. Check out Mattie Sue Athans book on Quakers. It has a sectionabout petting them.

There are ways to tame birds.

but if you dont have the time. I would suggest to try to find a breeder to trade him for a baby and ask him if he wants to give this one a mate.
Allso Try to see if the Quaker is good with men. Some parrots do well with other men if they are men friendly, same with girls. Thats sometimwe the case/.

Stop trying to pet his head.

I have a cat that was abused as a kitten, and she has definite personality issues. She likes to get pet on the head, but God help you if you pet too far down her back, she swats with claws out and will hiss and spit. It scares the snot out of guests.

Allow your pet the dignity of his preferences and strive to be his friend, not his "master".
