Apart from the fact that it must hurt to massage them.... It's probably not a good idea. It could cause further inflammation and spread the infection that is causing the swelling. Try a warm cloth or hot water bottle instead.

Swollen glands, probably not a good idea. Like the previous poster said, it would probably hurt. But depending on how close you massage that area, it can definitely be beneficial.

You should massage swollen areas towards you lymph nodes is what I was told. It helps to drain the fluid. On the legs that would be toward the groin.
And DO NOT use warmth. It will be just the right temperature to promote bacteria growth inside your body!
