bright red spots in my hair for over a month, now I want purple. Do I have to bleach the old spots or something to put semi-permant dye over them?

THe purple might not take over the bright red. You should bleach the colour first, then put on the purple.

You are right. You need to bleach first before applying second color. Otherwise it would be multi-color hair.
