The ten commandments are eternal in the sense that they reflect God's character of love. All ten of them were given to man for man's benefit.

God created man in his image, meaning that man is to be a picture of God, to reflect his character. Because man sinned and stopped being such a good image of God, God had to spell out the ten commandments in terms that man needed to hear them in. By striving to obey the ten commandments, which reflect God's character, the image of God is restored, if only just a little bit, in man. The commandments are also there to show us the difference between right and wrong, to prick our conscience when we sin, call us to repentance, and remind us of our need for forgiveness and salvation.

The ten commandments are not just a list of don'ts they are not just about outward behaviour, but about the inner motives of the heart. As Jesus said, if someone hates his brother he is guilty of murder even if he hasn't physically killed him. Or is someone look's at a woman with lustful intent, that is breaking the law on adultery.

The law is spiritual, and Jesus said that all who worship God must worship in spirit and in truth. It is the spirit of the law that is most important, and the spirit of the law is that of love. According to Jesus, the whole law can be summed up by "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind", and "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt 22:36-40). The ten commandments are just a more detailed expansion on these two.

All ten were made for man by man. Moses came down from the mountain with white hair because he was up there for thirty years. Just because it was way back when doesn't mean people weren't smart. Moses wanted the gold he stole from Pharaoh back and came up with a fantastic way to get it.
