Well, if he's just your friend, then YES it's polite because it's not like you guys are on a date or anything. It also depends on what he's saying about her. If he's saying mean & rude things about her, then maybe he's upset with her for breaking up with him, or upset with the fact that they broke up. If he's saying how great she was, then maybe he's not over her. You should be able to tell if he's still not over her.

If he brings her up in conversations with you, maybe it is because he feels completely comfortable with you and he believes you realize that his past is a part of who he is today. She was a part of his life and he cared about her but obviously, she wasn't right for him or they would still be together! Jealousy is a terrible thing and a sign of weakness. Take each day one at a time and, shoot, go for it, you'll never know if you don't try!

Don't know, what's the topic of conversation?

If you're talking about illegal aliens then I am liable to mention my ex-wife because she was one the whole time we were married. If we're talking about the war in Iraq and I find an absurd way to bring the conversation around to her, then yeah, it might be an issue.

It's neither polite or impolite. It just means he has something about her he wants to talk about. It doesn't necessarily mean he's hung up on her either. It could just be that he spent most of his time with her and he doesn't really have anyone else to talk about.

if the relation ship was a long one ,its very hard ,i think the first yrs of my marriage i brought my ex's name in every conversation ,not because i missed him ,im the one who divorce him ,but after 13 yrs its hard sometimes to let go ,its almost like loosing a limb .
be patient it gets better ,and one day her name will be WHO are you talking ?

I think if you are really interested....you shouldn't be afraid to express an interest....Just tell him "Look...I don't know if or when you are going to get past so and so...but when you do, call me, I wouldn't mind doing something together sometime..." and then leave it at that.

If I were you, I wouldn't bother. The world is full with men and women. Choose wisely.
