I'm doing a unit study with my son on Hawaii. I've searched the internet but can't find the answer to this question. Perhaps I'm not phrasing it correctly, so maybe someone can help me out!

Thanks!

One theory has it that the name comes from a combination of the words "Hawa" and "ii" and means a small or new homeland; "Hawa" meaning a traditionl homeland and "ii" meaning small and raging. The other theory is that the name comes from the traditional discoverer of the islands, Hawaii Loa.

Hawaii is said to be named for Hawaiiloa, hero of the foundation myth of the native Hawaiian people.

Hawaiʻiloa is the hero of an ancient Hawaiian legend about the settling of the Hawaiian Islands. After having accidentally stumbled upon the islands, he returned to his homeland which he called Ka ʻāina kai melemele a Kane, "the land of the yellow sea of Kane". He then organized a colonizing expedition that included his family and eight other skilled navigators. They settled on what is now the Island of Hawaiʻi, named in his honor. The legend contains reference to his sons: Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, and Maui, who settled on the islands that bear their names.

No, as per word meaning it means ' daughter of Laxmi ' just like Shailja means Parwati ( daughter of mountain, Himalaya ) Shail meand mountain & Shree means Laxmi. Parwati is also known as Himja as her father was Himalaya. I have read in one answer so for your in formation Ahilya was not born of the stone she was converted in to stone by a curse later released by the touch of Ram's feet.
