Hardwood flooring is solid wood. such as Maple, oak, mahogany and is approx 5/8" thick. It is laid on a sub floor. Hardwood floors can be sanded and re stained.
Laminate flooring is pressed wood fibres, and a layer of veneer is glued to it, to give the look of real wood. it is approx 1/4" thick and is laid on sub floors or in the case of a floating laminate floor, on foam. it can't be sanded or stained.

Hardwood flooring is usually 3/4" varnished wood(like a bowling alley), it can be refinished many times. Laminate(like Pergo) is a plastic type material with a woodlike appearance printed on it, very tough and atractive.

I believe hardwood is actual wood flooring with a layer of clear coat on it and the other has a wood underbase but has a plastic wood vinyl layer with a thick layer of clear coat on top. We have it in our living room and it looks real.
