A person becomes a "saint" when they receive God's Holy Spirit and are adopted into God's family. Peter received the title of "Saint" from the Catholic church. Somehow they think that God has given them the authority to confer "saintship" on people of whom they approve. The Apostle Paul knew better than that.

Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: (2) Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, (4) even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love (5) he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, (6) to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

Saint simply means "holy". Christians as a whole were often referred to as saints.

The same way I did and every other believer in Jesus Christ did.
We are made righteous by Christ finished work on the cross. We are sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Because the Vatican said so... so there!
The concept of 'saint' is a Roman Catholic idea - making someone (long after they have died) seem especially holy.. somehow extra-godly....
