Do not do the "shove their nose in it and spank them" routine. That is cruel and confusing to the dog. Unless you catch the dog in the act of soiling where they shouldn't, do not punish them.

It's best to try crate training. Buy a crate small enough for the dog to stand up and turn around but no larger - they will not soil where they sleep, but if they crate is too large they might use one end for a potty!

Crate the dog at night and for short periods of time during the day when you cannot keep an eye of her. Try taking her outside or to her papers (ew! I really do not recommend paper training unless you live in an apartment with no yard) every hour. Take her out after eating as well. You will begin to notice the signs of when she has to go and at which times she usally goes. It just takes a lot of consistancy. Praise and treats when she goes (as you have been doing) help. Smaller breeds can be more difficult to potty train, so good luck! :)

A lot of people recommend crate training. This is a good idea, but it didn't work with my MinPin puppy. He just pottied in the crate anyway. If I left the crate open, he would go in it just to potty. If you plan on letting your puppy potty in the house forever, newspaper or puppy pads are a good idea. I did this with my last min pin because I lived in a third floor apartment and had no yard. However, if you ever want her to go outside, you should avoid newspaper and puppy pads. Just let the dog out on a regular basis. If you catch the puppy going in the house where she shouldn't, scold her. If you find the poop or pee later, don't scold you puppy, she won't know what she did wrong.

Don't paper train her, because you are only training her to poop in the house

Buy a crate (cage that is not much larger than she is. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, crating a dog is not cruel. Dogs are den animals and prefer a home that is theirs. Introduce her to it slowly and give her yummy treats when she goes inside. NEVER use the crate to scold her...make it a happy place for her. She'll get used to it in no time.

Whenever you are not feeding her, playing with her, or she is outside, she is in the crate. Dogs will not soil their living area so she will learn control; If you buy the crater too big she'll poop in one end and sleep in the other so it must be no bigger than one she can comfortably turn around and lie down.

When you let her out of the crate she immediately goes outside until she poops and pees. Lavish praise and again give her treats when she does. You have to catch her immediately when she goes so she learns to recognize the reward for pooping or peeing.

Bring her in, let her play, then crate her again.

After you feed her, crate her for about 1/2 hour then take her out.

If you follow this regime she won't have a chance to soil the house, and will soon be letting you know she wants to go outside because she'll want to poop and get her reward.

Only use positive reinforcement, not punishment. Dogs can usually control themselves one hour for each month old they are so you can;t expect to crate her for 8 or ten hours if you live alone and work.

I used this method to house train my 4 month old beagle and within two weeks he was scratching at the door to go out to go. He also now loves to sleep and rest in his crate.

Google crate training dogs for more info. Good luck.

If you use newspaper or puppy pads it is hard to really housebreak them because they will use it but have a lot greater chance of going somewhere in the house or missing the area.

Crate training is the best method

Everytime the puppy eats or drinks, aobut 30 mins later, put him outside until he does his business and give him lots of praise for doing it.
Do not use puppy pads, they smell and it is hard to get them off them.

well if the dog uses the potty in side you should put there nose in it then spank them with a newspaper ( dont ever hit them with your hand because then when you go to pet your dog he/she will think your going to hurt them) and then put them outside for about 5-10 min.
