German Shepherds get a bad rap. Sure, they are protective, but no moreso than a retriever. I have an 19 month old GSD. My brother has a 19 month old Golden Retriever. Both are protective of their homes and families, both are generally friendly dogs outside the home. Many dogs will become extremely protective of their territory, especially if their family is in it. From another aspect, both are prone to hip and back problems, so check out your breeder beforehand. Also, know that both of these types of dogs are fur machines. Both need constant care with regard to the coat, as both have significant undercoats. Also, know that both breeds are high energy, and will require personal physical interaction at least 15 minutes at a time, at least 3 times a day. If they don't, they get bored, and as they are smart breeds, will figure out a way to occupy their time. That may mean that they will customize your wireless X-box 360 controller with a little tooth art, or that they will redecorate the house with that bundle of paper towels you had in the pantry from Costco. Either one of these hounds are great, but face it, the perception is that a Retriever will be the friend of anyone with a tennis ball, and the GSD will kill anyone who approaches, and will rapidly dig a shallow grave for the portions that he doesn't eat.... Either way - good luck. Go Shepherd!!!!

German Shepherd if you want a guard dog but Golden Retriever if you have or plan to have kids. Goldens are much more gentle and laid back.

Golden Retrievers are more friendly around kids and people. They're more of the "family pet, while a German Sheprad is more of a "prtective" pet. German Shepards are better to leave in the back yard, as a gaurd dog.

What are your plans for the dog? Kids now or in the future? It really depends on what your lifestyle is like. Both are great with kids. The shepherd is just that and both need training. shepherds can be the family babysitter and retrievers can too. I love the shepherds and have had GSD, Belgians and now Aussies. Research, talk with breeders, check the shelters and your local laws for breed specifiic legislation. Both are great family dogs I prefer the GSD if not an aussie.

how about a German Retriever?

If you are looking for security, go with the GS. If you have kids or want a good house dog, the Golden Retriever is the way to go.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Yx

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Very different dogs, although both intelligent. (as long as they are not from inbred/overbred backyard breeding lines...) Goldens are loving and friendly to everyone while not particularly protective. Shepherds tend to be more reserved with strangers at first and more protective of the home and family. Both are great dogs. Why not get one of each, or look in the shelter for a mix of the two?
